During last winter’s teacher’s strike the Republicans in the legislature caved and promised the teachers everything they were asking for. But having survived the election with their majorities intact it was time for revenge.
Senate Bill 451 incorporated some wage raises. It also had a grab-bag of De Vosian insanity designed to destroy the public school system. Charter schools, vouchers for home schoolers, and elimination of seniority were all in there.
It looked like the House would strip most of the crap out. But this afternoon it all got put back in on a party-line vote. Tomorrow is probably the final vote. It will be up or down, with no further amendments allowed.
The unions called a strike this evening. Every public school in the state is closed. Fasten your seat belt- it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
